BlueBucksClan has proven time and time again that they’re one of hip-hop’s best tandems. The duo, made up of Los Angeles MC’s DJ and Jeeezy Obama, first emerged on the scene back in 2019, and there haven’t been any signs of slowing down since. DJ & Jeeezy are Shaq & Kobe in the booth, and with their highly acclaimed Clan Way series hitting a three-peat, it’s very reminiscent of those early 2000s Lakers teams. BlueBucksClan sat down to talk about their latest project, Clan Way 3, being called “2 goats” by Drake, touring with OhGeesy, and more.
Clan Way 3 is out now; how has the reception been this last week?
Jeeezy: Shit’s been crazy. We been getting a lot of good feedback, man. Fans supporting it, everybody been playing it, it’s been going pretty crazy.
DC: What was the process like doing this project compared to the previous projects?
DJ: Nothing is really different, we just do what we know that’s all we know. We just be recording, recording and then we had so many songs we’ll just take a couple of them and put them into a project.
DC: The production on this project is next level; you got Zaytoven, Jetsonmade, and Honorable C Note, among others. Can you talk more about working with those guys?
Jeeezy: I mean it was cool working with them. Most of them reached out to us because they wanted to work with us.
DC: You guys kept it minimal with the features on this one, but You got Jeremih on Let Me Know. Can you talk about how that collaboration came to be?
Jeeezy: We were in the studio one night. We had a studio session with him. They made the beat right here. Everybody was there, all of the producers and we just recorded it, like we all did the hook together. It was cool, it was really just a regular session.
DC: “Who We Are” is the outro, a personal favorite of mine, can you talk about that session? And why was that picked to be last on the album?
DJ: When we make a song we never brainstorm about it and go into the studio knowing what song we wanna rap about and what type of song we’d love to do so it’s just like a regular song that just came about. We probably were at Tao that night or I don’t know what made us think about that. And then it being the outro, we didn’t make that song to be the outro like I said it was a song we made then that just happened to be the list how we made it. Yeah, it sounded good.
DC: You guys released the music video for “Can’t Believe It”; it’s a movie. Can you talk about making those visuals?
DJ: Shit. That’s not our first time doing a video like that. But yeah, that was a little bit more like narrating a little story behind it and, you know, that’s kind of our first time doing that, it was like one of those long video shoots. So just to make it make it really perfect. So we did a lot of different stuff, we got in a helicopter, we really got in and we really flew a helicopter. And we really did everything in the video. We really did it. So that was cool.
“Can’t Believe It”
DC: You guys just toured North America with OHGEESY. How was the tour?
DJ: That shit is different, you know. That was our first tour like that. That tour was like two months, almost. That was the first time being gone on the road like that for that long. Actually being on a tour bus. And like, you know, different city, different place, every night. So it was fun. It was a good experience. But I feel like now you know, we know what to expect. You know, we got kind of tired at the end, you know, but now we know what we want.
Jeeezy: It was a real good experience, shoutout OhGeesy for bringing us on tour with him. That shit was lit and we learned a lot too.
DC: You guys just shut down the LA Leakers; being from LA, what does that mean to you guys?
Jeeezy: It was hard because I remember growing up always listening to Power 106. That shit was hard for us to finally be on there. We’ve been wanting to get on there for a minute. So it’s cool. Everybody fucking with it. So that’s really cool.
DJ: It’s big for us. Everything for the city. You know, we just want to be a part of it.
Jeeezy: That’s why we had to make sure we had to rap over some classic LA beats.
DC: Drake called you two goats on his story, then you guys did the OVO Collegiate shoot shortly after, can you talk more about that?
Jeeezy: Shoutout Drake man. He saw our Fire in The Booth freestyle, like as soon as we dropped it. He posted it, hit us up and everything and did the OVO shoot. We’ve been on OVO Sound before.
DC: In this day of age in music, with everything moving so fast, how do you two avoid getting stagnant and continue to level up?
DJ: Man that’s just our goal, that’s all we focused on we don’t really focus on nothing else. So just keep going, just feel like the little routine we got or how we got it going, I feel like it’s working.
DC: What do want the audience to takeaway after listening to Clan Way 3?
DJ: I just want them to listen to it, and really hear what we’re saying. We’re gonna keep comin like that. I know a lot of people probably thought, thinkin, hoping that we fell off. It’s nowhere near that, nowhere.
DC: Before this album dropped, people were seriously saying you guys fell off, what are your thoughts on that?
DJ: We don’t pay it any mind (laughs).
Jeeezy: There ain’t no way we can even fall off. That ain’t even in our brand. We already know what we are capable of. it’s only gonna get better you know? We only gonna keep saying harder shit. But our real fans, they don’t even talk like that. So I don’t be worried about that.
DC: Now that this album is out, what’s next for you as we close out 2022?
Jeeezy: Tryna drop again before the year ends. Tryna drop the CW3 Deluxe. We’re gonna have a show at The Novo on December 30. Just more music, keep dropping videos, just keep it going.
DC: In your guy’s opinion what would make this album a success to you?
Jeeezy: Shit, to me it’s already a success like everything else like, we don’t be looking into the numbers and all that. We see the impact it has like we have already seen the impact we’ve had, but it’s still going, You know like people are still talking about it and people are gonna be talking about it for a while so that’s what we are really going for, is that impact.
DC: Anything else you guys want to say to the fans before we get out of here?
DJ: Keep streaming. Keep fucking with us. We love y’all.
Jeeezy: Go get the album, go check out the LA Leakers freestyle. Let’s keep it going man.
