Boy Sand has provided the first visual effort from his recent release Kool Herc: Fertile Crescent on Stones Throw Records. “Peace & Love” is a standout track on a standout record produced entirely by El RTNC. In this minimalist and trippy video directed by Chris Antonelli, Boy Sand and 3 acquaintances are transported between various New York City backdrops as a loose narrative of love and separation reinforces the reflective message behind Homeboy’s bars. Lines like “Geniuses, Nefertiti and Tut, that’s what we were once, that was we and us” and “it’s no wonder why we in ruts, seems we be in a rush just for being tough, and rather would keep it tucked than keep in touch” are just the surface of the infinite depth behind his lyricism, but more importantly the poetic structure of stacking the short verses incrementally, repeating and adding another as the song progresses, is as unorthodox as it is genius. It appears Boy Sand is aware of the amount of replays it takes for fans to catch every reference in his complex wordplay, but by the last verse run through during “Peace and Love” the full extent of the cohesive thought process is realized. No one else is doing hip-hop like this, and that is why this gets the post.
