Dutch The Dreamer returns to our pages to premiere a smooth new record entitled “Do What You Do.” It’s the latest taste of his upcoming project, and is an upbeat and feel-good record from the Connecticut upstart. With some complementary vocals from Phill Celeste covering the hook, he and Dutch make for a smooth combo over the dance-ready production from Jiggy Hendrix. I also asked Dutch a few questions since we’re close to the release of his project, which you can read after the jump.

Enjoy his newness and get to know him a lil’ bit below!

Where are you from originally, and what is it’s affect on your music today?
Meriden Connecticut, aka “The Aquarium.” I call Meriden the aquarium, but some people call it the dirty den. We’re in the middle of Connecticut surrounded by some of the richest towns in the states. It’s where a lot of CEO’s stay, and we’re out here looking around like, “damn, ya’ll got all this money and dope shit and we get this?” There’s minimal jobs around, and it seems like this is the last stop on the ride for some people.
A lot of people got involved in negative things growing up like drugs and violence, or just sort of gave up eventually—just being around it makes me feel like it’s sink or swim, like I’m either gonna stick around here doing the dumb shit I’ve been doing and just continue to fuck up even worse, or I’m gonna really try and make this music work.
You incorporate various kinds of drugs into your lyrics, what has their effect been like on your music since you first experimented with them?
Well the drug influences come from what’s just been around me my entire life. I started smoking weed like 13 or 14 and that shit just opened up my mind to bigger ideas and just kind of like a wanderlust for a more euphoric experience from life. Eventually around like 16 mushrooms and acid got in the mix, and I think anyone whose done those will tell you that your whole perspective on life will change.
Doing it so young, I just didn’t care about regular shit anymore—as I grew up I was chasing bigger experiences. As far as it changing my music, I stopped limiting myself and wanted everything to sound epic, like you’re floating in space and you’re really feeling the music in your soul.
Your music kind of reminds me of early Mac Miller, good flows and relatable but cleverly-written, drug-inspired lyrics. What’s your writing process like?
I get the Mac Miller comparisons every now and then. My writing process is weird, I just kind of zone out from the world. I write the most by myself when I just let the vibes bring me where they need to go. I keep it real with my songs; emotions, experiences, ideas and dreams good or bad that all come from my heart.
What’s your end goal with music?
My end goal with music is just to experience everything I can as long as I’m here. I’m finally having fun with my life, and I just want everyone who fucks with my shit to do the same. I wanna put something in the world that people can enjoy, and just see thousands of hands at shows, people jumping and dancing.
