It’s that time of the year where XXL picks their top 10 freshmen rappers that they believe will make an impact in hip-hop and once again, they’re giving the fans the opportunity to select the 10th freshman. And just like last year, XXL has provided 50 artists to select from. Ten of the 50 are already selected which ever artist with the most votes that hasn’t already been secretly picked out by XXL gets the 10th spot.
Don’t be surprised if they play games with who actually makes the class. Both SpaceGhostPurrp and A$AP Ferg are candidates for the Freshmen Class but I can see a situation where XXL chooses one of the two due to obvious reasons when it’s arguable that they both made enough noise to claim spots on the list. Also, last year, King Chip stated that he turned down XXL twice and that being on the cover was a bad look. He even made “Fuck XXL” a trending topic. I can agree with him that the picks becomes more questionable every year and it doesn’t really hold much value, but it does benefit the artists with the exposure they receive. Honestly, when the list came out last year, who would have guessed that Macklemore would have the most success as an independent artist for 2012?
You can head over to XXL’s site and cast your vote. Just keep in mind that regardless of whoever XXL does decide to select for this year’s freshmen class, expect a lot of slander on Twitter. Some fans just can’t be happy for others.
