It’s an era of alternative everything, and even the self-imposed impenetrability of hip-hop by its myriad of devotees can’t escape the very much needed genre muddling represented by Ho99o9 on their debut album United States of Horror. Relatable in title and visceral in execution, the Los Angeles-based duo of TheOGM and Eaddy make it clear they emerged from and channel the underground punk scene of New York’s boroughs, while keeping in line with rap’s ever happening evolution that afforded them high profile festival slots and supporting tours before planting the flag of their debut album last week. Described as equal parts Death Grips and Black Flag, but really tapping into a far more time relevant sound than just that, check out the chaotic video for “War Is Hell” for a proper introduction to Ho99o9.
