We’re back with Week 2 of our brand new Weekly Detox column where I outline Hip-Hop news from the previous week. I’m going to need a late pass for this week since this is a couple days late I’ve been busy with getting some other things done. But I’ve been thinking about dropping this shit on Mondays opposes to Sundays but I might just go back on forth with it depending on how it’s being received. But as of right now, expect the next one to drop on Monday. So let’s start this shit off with this…..
What I easily consider the biggest news to come out last week is that J. Cole has stated that he and Kendrick are back at work for that mythical collab album that they plan on dropping sometime this lifetime. In his interview with Bootleg Kev, Cole states that he just recorded a couple more tracks with Kendrick and they have about 4-5 new songs now locked away. Now if this is true, this would be extremely dope since the last time two big name rappers that got together for a full album were Jay-Z and Kanye West. With these two are sitting at the top of the game right now, no better time to drop a collab than this year. But with both these guys working hard on their sophomore albums, I doubt it. If anything it’ll come next year when their schedule starts to clear up. I just hope I don’t have to put this under the lists of collab albums that are said to be in the works but never happened like Wayne/T-Pain, Wayne/Juelz Santana or Wayne/Drake…oh wait…
And while we’re on the subject of Lil Wayne, he just settled a lawsuit for unpaid royalties with David Kirkwood for a track that didn’t even make it onto the final cut on Tha Carter III! This is actually the third time Wayne has been sued over unpaid beats all from the same album. You can learn a couple things from this story: (1) you can STOP sending Lil Wayne all your dope beats. It’s apparent that he does not and probably will not pay you for it. Just ask David Kirkwood, Deezle or Bangladesh OR (2) send him all your dope beats and hopefully Wayne makes it a chart topping single and just pray he doesn’t pay you so you’re able to sue him later down the line. Either way, I think it’s a come up if you’re an aspiring producer. So congrats to David Kirkwood who just got paid 1.5 million dollars for his beat on the bonus edition of Tha Carter III.
Apparently Drake and Lil B are currently “doing something big” together and “Drake is the only artists Lil B wants to work with” right now. I don’t know what’s weirder: Lil B and collabing with Drake or the fact that he refers to himself in third person. I use to be a Lil B fan until I realized that he wasn’t going to evolve and still continued to put out dumb shit and even went as far as dropping a song AND video for a track called “I’ma Eat Her Ass”. I think that was the breaking point for me. I still fucks with his album I’m Gay though. If you guys have listened to the album, you would know that it exceeded everyone’s expectations. Like he has some real HARD hip-hop beats on that album…what the actual fuck.
GOOD Music has officially picked up another artist in Teyana Taylor as she has posted pics of her officially signing to Kanye’s label. What was she to the group before she officially signed? I don’t know. I mean she performed at SXSW in 2011 with Ye when they performed “Dark Fantasy”. On another note, I did not know til that day that she was the uncredited female vocals on that song. So this whole time she wasn’t signed? Weird. I would’ve thought that if Kanye was going to officially sign someone as the first female rapper to GOOD Music, he would pick up Azealia Banks. That would’ve been a good addition to the group.
This news just dropped last night but I figured I’d include it in this week’s instead of putting it off an extra week. The first line up of Jay-Z’s Philly fest is announced and will feature performances from Jay-Z headlining, Pearl Jam, Skrillex, Miike Snow, Afrojack, Calvin Harris, Odd Future, D’Angelo, Maybach Music (feat. Rick Ross, Wale, Meek Mill), Passion Pit, Santigold, Dirty Projectors, X, Janelle Monae, Prince Royce, Rita Ora, Savoy (DJ set) and The Knocks. This show is already looking promising but the fest seems to fall on the same exact day as one of the Rock The Bell shows. This either happened from bad planning or Hov is doing this on purpose like the business man he is. Either way, I’m expecting a sell out for both shows so this won’t look bad on Hov’s part on trying to steal the shine.
And for week two, my “Rapper of the Week” is none other than Chi-Town’s Rockie Fresh. He returned home last week to deliver a outstanding show at the Hard Rock which looked like a sold-out crowd from the videos I’ve seen. What the coolest part about the show was that it was $Free.99. With cosigns from Rick Ross, chilling at Diddy’s crib, verified on Twitter and in his own hometown, he could’ve easily made a quick buck but instead gave back to his people. Like this should’ve been the artist Kanye West should’ve collabed with instead of Chief Keef. But anyway, I definitely see a bright future for this kid. Peep our post on the show and also check out his latest mixtape, Driving 88. Dropped a little bit ago, but I still keep that shit on replay every day.
Once again, thanks again for checking the Weekly Detox for Hip-Hop news and my opinions that most of you guys don’t give a shit about. If you haven’t, you can check out last week’s installment here and you can catch the next one next Monday.
