Pairing a tried and true beat maven with one of the more noteworthy wordsmiths in the game right now seems to make sense. This time around, Oddisee and Homeboy Sandman joined forces on “Watchu Want From Me?” – a bouncy groove riding track reminiscent of late 90s underground throwbacks. Piano-lead and hook-bred, subject matters ranging from playful analogies of Autobots to drama of having children out of wedlock, and even scandalous politicians, are interwoven into the punching lyrical barrage. Boy Sand is at the very least showing his growth as a song crafter, implementing vocal echoes, ad-libs, and head nodding rhythms. Look out for the new album First of a Living Breed to bring more evidence of his status as an artists sculpting the future of lyrical and conscious hip-hop.
