In the past year, New York City has found its of way producing some of the hottest stars of tomorrow. The bronx drill scene has completely re-energized fans of NY drill. The rap community as a whole hasn’t been this invested in New York since the early 2000’s. Timmy Banz FrmUpTop is the NY drill scenes hidden gem, a 17-year-old creative, born and raised in Albany, New York. The uptown rapper recently connected with Virginia’s Mont Dinero for an ode to the streets in “Boyz to Men.”
Drill can be hard to cover sometimes, often the artists are so filled with pain, trauma, and paranoia from everyday interactions in their neighborhoods.. Seeing friends get shot, losing loved ones, getting robbed, all traumas the youth of America shouldn’t have to experience. Drill is an expression of the realities in which they live, an expression of emotion, its art like any other genre, however you wanna spin it…
Timmy and Mont throughout the track express the full reality of growing up in their inner-city communities. Which allows the audience to get a true perspective of their real life tribulations. These boys are talking real pain, real trench music. The feeling is raw, very much reminds me of the drill movement down in the DMV and even out in Chicago. Mont delivers an infectious chorus that had me feeling like Gervonta Davis in the boxing gym. While Timmy laid down some of the hardest drill punchlines I’ve heard all year, bars have been loping in my head since the first listen. Whole scene comes together with the video direction from Elshaddai over at New York’s very own United Universe. Making the track a necessity for any playlist you got on streaming platforms.
