Seemingly a veteran with a catalog to back up the claim, XO has been dropping Capital magic on the soundverse since 2007. Despite teaming up with the genius of Oddisee and yU to form the power trio Diamond District, it’s with the mixtape teaser The Color Grey that we get a full sample of big things to come from the DC emcee. Whether it’s the standout lo-fi funkability that underplays his rapid fire flow on “Good Vibes, ” or his homage to unlikely characters like DMX on “Just Cuz” and Kanye West on “Petey Greene,” XO’s standalone delivery shows promise for the era that marks the aforementioned artists as OGs. It may be October, but this is just the beginning for the Mello Music Group member that plans to drop his debut on the label this year, and also pump out a collaborative effort with Oddisee and yU before 2013.
