Last October I descended from my abode in Colorado’s San Juan mountains for a 5,500 mile road trip through the Western region of the United States. Among a methodically chosen playlist was the avante garde rap opus Lese Majesty from the eccentric duo Shabazz Palaces. That album remained in rotation during drawn out days in the literal middle of no where that defines the West’s appeal. First catching on to their moves at South By Southwest a few years ago, the enigmatic entity seems to remain a necessary mainstay for out of the box listeners, but with a nod from Jack White and a deal from Sub Pop Records serving as recent developments for Palaces, it looks like they are leveling up. Matching their haunting, often off kilter texture waves is a tripped out visual executed by animator Chad VanGaalen that will makes that blunt hit all the right places.
