Tyler, The Creator’s Golf Wang’s Spring/Summer 2015 collection dropped yesterday (May 7). One particular T-shirt has people talking. The shirt is a nod to LGBT rights however using symbol has caught a lot of mixed attention. Tyler went on Instagram to announce that he will be explaining the symbolism behind the t-shirt single and why he chose to do it.
On his Tumblr, Tyler shared the article from his Golf Media app explaining the use of the imagery. In short, he’s trying to break down the racist and prejudice barriers that the symbols represent.
In the past Tyler has criticized for his use the word “faggot” and has even lost some concerts opportunities for being perceived as homophobic. However, he’s far from it. Some artists of his collective are LGBT members and generally only promotes finding your way. In a 2011 interview with NME he talks about this misguided misconception.
“It hurts me when people can’t see beyond the first layer,” he said “They don’t listen to the word play, or the patterns we use in the song, or the vocabulary we use. They just look at the word ‘sodomise,’ or ‘rape,’ or ‘bitch’ or some shit, and just go like ‘Oh my god, did you hear what he just said?’ No, did you hear how he said it? The terms he used to say it?”
