Since making waves with her track “Caught Up” last year, Dee Gatti has emerged as one of the most exciting emerging R&B acts of the year. Her debut project “Just Called To Say” capitalizes on this momentum with eight tracks that cement her as a serious talent.

The standout cuts on this project, not including the already released “Caught Up” and “Clear My Mind”, are the title track and “Must Be Something”.

“Just Called To Say”, for starters, lures the listener in with guitar lines reminiscent of Summer Walker’s “Playing Games”. Gatti uses the instrumental as a guide to create a conversation between her and her lover. The Fort Worth, TX native begins the track with lyrics that resemble a voicemail. “I just called to say, called three times today day, won’t pick up your phone, don’t wanna hear shit I say,” Gatti croons.

As the beat swells, Gatti acknowledges patiently that her lover has options and that she’s treated her wrong. However, as soon as the 808s barge in, Gatti pleads, “so tell me what your problem is, I’m tired of this”. The rest of the song sees Gatti explaining that she’s distraught over the prospect of losing someone she’s so close to.

Next, “Must Be Something” sees the singer try an upbeat instrumental that sprinkles on 90s R&B vibes throughout. Gatti also interpolates Trey Songz and Nicki Minaj’s smash hit “Touchin, Lovin” on the track’s chorus. “Must Be Something” is a perfect change of pace from much of the lovelorn, slower tracks the album has to offer.

As a whole, “Just Called To Say” is one of the most cohesive R&B projects from an up and comer to date and certainly puts Dee Gatti in the running for the next big R&B star.
