With no introduction needed, Toronto icon Drake has officially marked the beginning of summer with tonight’s release of his newest double album ‘Scorpion’, which features songs ‘God’s Plan’ and ‘Nice for What’. After one of the oddest years in the star’s career; one which included secret children, sleeplessly streaming Fortnite and all that can fit between such goalposts, Drake has come to shut down any misconception that he isn’t the largest star in the music industry, cementing his legacy with another album of awe-inspiring anthems of youth and success.
‘Scorpion’ sees Drake at the peak of his game, able to pull up from anywhere on the court and effortlessly score the winning basket. Nothing but net, of course. With this 5th studio project, supported by longtime collaborators Noah ‘40’ Shebib and Oliver El-Khatib, he has created a two-headed dragon through his double album approach. One emphasizing his unbelievably fluid yet piercing bars over lush, widely influenced production; such as on the sneak dissing ‘I’m upset’. Yet at the same time, never forgetting what keeps him on the throne, allowing us to flip the record over for body controlling dance rhythms that settle perfectly into our summer playlists, while forcing the club to stay open for an extra hour.
Few artists come around with such a high level of repeated success and quality, but with this release, Drake just confirms what we felt he could become, but now can reaffirm with proof of performance.
