Calling audibles on his audible output, we thought we were going to get the Supreme album next from the ever enigmatic producer (and sometimes emcee) Wrathmatics. The Sac-town representer instead has flipped to a new project The Crates of Wrath vol. 1 as his next sonic offering. The tape is set to drop as soon as February 17th, and will be comprised of top picks of previously unreleased tracks, dope new exclusive features, and the fresh brand of signature instrumentals we have come to expect from Wrath. The first leak from the album “No Love [organized random]” sets young Philadelphia rapper Emerald Odyss against an initialized war drum turned haunting vocal sample, riding the subtle bongos straight to the bass line. The sharp snare hits hold out for 60 seconds of endless cunning bars before one upping the track to another level. Many of us have probably never heard Emerald flex his flow, but these replay worthy bars land, take off, and bomb back more times than you can count on multiple spins. It’s not just rapping fast, it’s fitting as many proper lines on the beat as possible without sounding forced.
Wrath lends some linear notes on the track saying, “I think “No Love [organized random]” is a great example of showcasing my skills outside of the emcee light as a producer. I made it of course, but more so as an executive producer and A&R. I found Emerald out of nowhere, and located the correct beat for him out of the vault. That beat is actually circa 2011,” he explains and continues outlining the process, “then theres my editing sense as I sequenced the beat around his vocals, adding the crescendo drum breaks and drops at key moments, as well as delays and reverbs.” If this well thought out pairing is any indication of what The Crates will give us next week, then go ahead and mark this as a breakout tape of February and beyond. Stay tuned for more exclusives.
