Handyman by Teezo Touchdown
Teezo Touchdown is back and collaborating with more prominent musicians than ever. “Handyman,” featuring Kenny Beats, has to be one of my favorite cuts from Teezo. We get this dope fusion of rock, R&B, and Hip-Hop with this intimate jam. Playing on the idea of being a handyman and being broken, Teezo gives us insightful lyrics into trying to fix yourself up. I love the relatability and visual component of the record. A dope start to 2022 for him!
Trainwreck by Jon Waltz
Jon Waltz has been a favorite of mine for a while, and I feel he’s tapped into a new era of his career. “Trainwreck” is a sweet-sounding anti-pop banger with insightful lyricism and earworm melodies. His tonality on the record gets me going because it’s just so calm yet cutting. Verzache gives a stellar guest performance and compliments the song so well. I recommend you give this one a spin!
Starter Jacket by Emmavie & Wakai
If you are looking for some smooth R&B and Hip-Hop, “Starter Jacket” is the jam for you. Emmavie and Wakai are fresh on my radar with this record but have significantly impacted me. This song is an absolute slap, and I’ve had it on repeat my whole road trip. I love how smooth the record is; it just gives off some real vibes. I swear this will set the mood for any sensual girl/dude you are with! BIG VIBES!
Magic by Vince Staples
“Magic” is Vince on a legit party beat, and I’m mad he hasn’t worked with DJ Mustard before this. The hook is sticky and will have you humming the melody upon a few listens. The beat gives off that natural Westcoast party energy, which I’m excited to see Vince participating in. I’m hoping we get a music video for this song because that will help push this heater.
Taken Back by Allen Haley
“Taken Back” is a dope song. That being said, I have mixed feelings about it. Allen Haley defiantly has a catchy song on his hands that I find very enjoyable. However, it does sound identical to Dominic Fike (I’m a huge Fike stan) and doesn’t add anything new to that style. Even the word choice sounds like Dom wrote it. This song shows so much potential for Allen, but I’ll be waiting for him to come into his own creatively.
Somebody’s Daughter by Ashoka
This is a fucking BOP! Ashoka has one with “Somebody’s Daughter”! I love this mixture of R&B and Hip-Hop over the nocturnal production. His vocal delivery is on point, sounding so clean. The hook is catchy, and the verses are smooth. The music video is an excellent addition to the song, really showing Ashoka’s personality. This is someone who will have a great 2022!
