Homeboy Sandman – Not Really (Prod. by Jonwayne) [video]

I don’t think anyone is sleeping on Sandman anymore. Coming to us on the heels of his acclaimed album debut for Stones Throw Records, First of a Living Breed gets its first visual accompaniment just one week later with this video for “Not Really.” A lo-fi, slow paced, and seamless track that thrives on the simplicity of thoughtful rhymes meeting beats, the video keeps with that theme exactly. Shot raw on an anonymous street in New York City right before a storm, Boy Sand speaks to the extras before the song comes in saying, “listen, just in case it starts raining like crazy, we’re going to come through right now. Do something cool, so this turns into the video, that turns into something cool.” Whether he knew it would work or not, the single, continues take follows him as he walks down the sidewalk confronted by nagging reporters, groupies, friends, fans, industry reps, and a vibed out crowd. They all end up following him until he confronts the media again – and obvious dose of symbolism that represents his recent swan dive into top to bottom success. Although he repeats “not really” to the self addressed question “people asked me if my life changes” during the hook, something tells me it is about to.
