Mobile, Alabama’s rise as a scene, and the sound associated with it for that matter, has been meteoric and quite unexpected over the past several years as artists all over the mainstream are surfacing from the area and are accompanied by a dense underground scene armed with a unique style, totally distinctive and derivative to the area. The multi-faceted lyrics of lament and scores of double-entendres have captivated many while supplying a certain type of catharsis best achieved with the plucky, southern-fried acoustic guitars which power many of the area’s biggest songs’ melodies. Of all of the different and respectively brilliant artists coming from Mobile, Jay Montana has to be one of the very most consistent and talented in the region’s underground scene and has seemed poised to make the leap to the mainstream for over a year now. His flow is more energetic and upbeat when compared to the melancholy of many artists who have found success from Mobile and his charisma is obvious across his numerous visuals, most recently with his video for “Ain’t My Kind.” He teamed up with DakMagic to bring this song to life and captured the artist in several compelling scenes across East Atlanta. Montana’s frequent collaborator Kabo once again is responsible for this instrumental and are proving to be a formidable producer/artist duo and I hope we get more music from them soon.
