Katozai is a name that has been making ripples across the underground for quite a while now. The 17-year-old Toronto native has spent the last year dropping heat month after month with notable features from peers like Tana, Xhulooo, and Shaio. If you know anything about these names, you know that the energy is always electric, and Katozai has proven time and time again that he is undoubtedly on the same wavelength.
After dropping off an energetic 4 song EP last month called cantslimek, Katozai has brought even more power with his follow-up EP ego death. Starting off strong with the Maajins-produced triumph, “trueluv,” Katozai shows off boisterous, unfazed vocals that cut through and amplify your psyche from the moment you press play. This smash is paired with a hyperactive visual directed by vorxx that ties all the energy of the EP together and showcases how truly lit this kid is. His immaculate melodic techniques paired with equally punchy flows create a blazing experience that has automatic replay value.
Jumping quickly into a slightly slower record, “guild,” Katozai flexes more of his melodic tendencies over heavenly production that has you floating. Combining this harmonious approach with his ability to switch up flows effortlessly gives you the outro track, “colder nights.” The way he attacks these ambient trap-style instrumentals is so unique; you can definitely hear the underground influence, but his method is just different enough to prove that the 17-year-old is a standout artist that you should keep your eye on. Being so young, it’s truly exciting to think about just how much potential there is for this kid as he continues to grow in life and in music. I am certainly intrigued to see where he takes this sound and am even more thrilled to potentially be the first to put you on to such a diamond in the rough. Check out ego death below, along with the euphoric visuals for his highlight single “trueluv.”
