Our increasingly motivated friend, favored wordsmith, and now aspiring hip-hop journalist Homeboy Sandman has been personifying the term “busy” over the past two weeks. It’s become nearly impossible to keep track of his moves, whether it is dropping a new visual for his debut Stone’s Throw full length record First Of A Living Breed, circulating a standout assortment of bars on a sneak attack track that is making the blog rounds, publishing an insightful and reflective narrative on Gawker, or connecting with MTV to rundown who he feels is dope among the underground in his neck of the woods. Here is a recap of everything Boy Sand has gotten into lately that is worth your attention.
First he gave visual honors to “Illuminati” with a very intense, image-driven sociopolitical centered video to match the no nonsense bars that fill the conscious track. The fourth video installment from the new record keeps up with the theme of using a minimalist filter to tap into the creativity that can come with simplicity. Truly the most resinating audio-visual piece of art Sandman has offered us so far.
Next he teamed up with the German hip-hop shop HHV.de to celebrate their 10th anniversary with a limited run 7-inch split with Jaylib. The sold out single of 300 flew off the shelf in half a day, but luckily the Homeboy track is available in the digital format as well. The exclusive cut is titled “Richardsun” and the clever bells and flute laced instrumental is produced by Rthentic RTNC.
After a handful of profound articles penned for the Huffington Post about controversial topics surrounding hip-hop culture, he next pushed out a piece for Gawker about the perils and rewards of standing up for yourself – through the lens of one of his own physical encounters. The well written narrative continues his saga of applying personal anecdotes to make points about societal ills and instances of injustice that are happening right now before his eyes. This time he aimed to surface his thoughts on New York’s troubling “stop and frisk” policies that are targeting minorities and violating Constitutional rights.

Last on the list is a rundown he did for MTV Hive of the Top Five NYC Underground Emcees right now. Worth a read to see what is what, and the names he shouts out may surprise you.
