Full transparency: I rarely listen to lyrical rap. Many of the lyrical rap tropes are so deeply embedded in its culture that it can be hard for artists to really stick out. However, that is not the case with Los Kemet.

Kemet‘s roots in Jackson, MI are clear as day with his southern drawl and choice of instrumentals but not in a redundant way. His new project Got Drunk For The Most High showcases his unique tone and knack for rhyming over woozy, jazzy production.

“Most Civilized Spirit” is the first track that really caught my attention. The song’s gleeful production under Los‘ pounding flow is a welcome contrast. Next, “Bron Money” is a triumphant track with poignant bars about scrapping the “safer route” in favor of carving his own path. The track’s hook and cadence is perfect for real rap heads and pregaming college students alike.

Another standout is “Shake Junt” which sounds like if Key Glock was a lyrical rapper. The dreary trumpet lines that echo in the background along with the chopped n’ screwed effects behind the hook give it a distinctively Southern feel without sacrificing Kemet‘s distinct voice.

Got Drunk For The Most High is Los Kemet‘s first full-length project since 2021’s My Love Is Crack and shows significant growth and more attention to detail. Check out the project below.
