Chicago’s 2008ighties crew and The BRKF$T Club member Hasan Odom aka Sani dropped his anticipated instrumental mixtape Retrograde and took a minute to connect with us about his crew, his production process, and the tape. Check it out here and spin the brand new project below.

When did you start producing and unite as The BRKF$T Club?

Well I’ve been making beats since ’07, starting my freshmen year in high school. Around mid-2009, all of the BRKF$T Club was formed and I have been making beats for them ever since.

The groups breakout track “The Fellowship” features a beat that is also on Retrograde, right?

“The Fellowship” was a collab beat with me and Julian Malone, but the part that I made did make it on my first beat tape, titled Nocturne (NCTRN).

Tell me about your process when setting out to lay down Retrograde.

The process for Retrograde was pretty fun. I wanted to show off all of the retro styles of producing that I had. Most of the drums I used were from my favorite classic soul records and alternative joints. I even used hardware. I used a 4-track tape mixer for the “Degraded” beat. I hooked my Dreamcast up to the mixer so I could take a sound effect from this game to use as a tag throughout the tape.
