Years ago, at the inception of my rap blogging career, I was cruising YouTube and found a video of a white kid —maybe 13-14 years old—rapping like he definitely wasn’t a 13 or 14-year-old white kid. His name was Sowle and I was definitely intrigued by him, so I decided to keep an eye on him for a bit. The potential was there, he just needed to develop a bit—which he definitely had plenty of time for at that age.
I’ve written for a bunch of sites in between then and now, checking back every now and then for his new stuff and was pleasantly surprised to see him in the production credits on a track from DC favorite Max Wonders not too long ago. Not only had he been producing for Wonders, but was of course working on his solo material himself, and finally released some new music recently in the form of “Interrupt,” which premiered through Pigeons and Planes a few days back.
Sowle has grown up quite a bit since his days of rapping over Biggie instrumentals on YouTube, and has developed a relaxed, yet piercing rhyming style. He produced the track too, and creates a dark, foggy soundscape with some gloomy synths and melodic drums. All in all, a pretty dope showing from the Michigan emcee.
