Let me take you back to October of 2014. Sacramento-based producer and Daily Chiefers favorite Wrathmatics teams up with South Carolina emcee Corey Gipson on the Keep It Human EP. 10 of the best instrumentals from Wrath’s beat vault, some dating back a considerable amount of time, are used as the canvas for Gipson’s debut album. Hearing a dexterous emcee on the array of cuts was necessary, but over time there has been a call from dedicated Wrath fans to liberate the instrumentals given their dynamic tonality and beautifully sample-laden nature. The smokey horns of “Silhouette,” snappy Jazz snare and organ layers on “Everywhere,” and the distorted piano flips that touch sped up drums on “Keep It Human” are noticeable highlights that tell a story all their own without the inclusion of bars. Wrath is a digger’s digger, able to find rare pieces that puzzle together well with classic sonic identifiers. He is also the type of artist that liberates 10 cleaned up dope instrumentals, only to add six more never before heard beats as a bonus. Of those, the string loop on “Thank Heaven,” cinematic upshot of “Chance [Tails],” and the eerie tone of “Somebodies” are all tied together by the comfort of vinyl crackle in the background. We can only hope the evolving producer also decides to flex some bars on the complex, glitches of “The Keeper” one day like he did on the rare “Supreme” two years ago.
