With just three years short of a two decades long, XXL magazine has announced that they will officially end their print editions. Recently purchased by Townsquare Media, they will not put their efforts to the digital field.
Says Bill Wilson, the chief content officer of Townsquare, and Harris Publications’ president Ben Harris, to the NY Post:
“We think XXL has strong potential in both the digital and live events market.” – Wilson
“We incubated something digitally, but the Townsquare people can take it to the next level with their digital expertise. I don’t think it is a cost-cutting thing. I think it is an opportunity for Townsquare to do more with [the franchise].” – Harris
Just a month ago, Spin Media decided to end VIBE’s print run, as well. I guess it is true: printed media is slowly dying. The final print issue (October/November) of XXL magazine will hit newsstands shortly. RIP XXL.
