For as long as I can remember, Philly’s rap scene has been dominated by gut punching flows, intimidating lyrics and menacing instrumentals. As much as I love gritty street rap, Philly has been in desperate need of a change of pace.

Luckily, producer Manny Laurenko is helping to usher in a new sound in Philadelphia. His new project Storm Coming showcases Philly’s up-and-comers and a few out-of-towners on some of the most eerie and spacey production you’ve ever heard. On top of his off-the-wall production style, Laurenko displays his ability to reinvent the sounds of some of Philly’s brightest stars.

Take Manny‘s collaboration with Poundside Pop on “5 Star” for example. The track shows PSP‘s evolution from an artist with a couple underground classics years ago to someone who has completely reinvented himself for the better.

This is also the case for OT7Quanny‘s “Virgil” which boosted Quanny from a local rapper with a cool flow to one of the most notable rappers coming out of Philly. On top of re-inventing artists’ sounds, Laurenko makes sure to continue his hot streak with frequent collaborators like Columbia signee T$AN and Matt Ox.

Storm Coming also sees Manny‘s first high profile collaboration with his Lucki assisted track “Space Boy”. The track is aptly named due to it sounding like the Chicago rapper is being launched into space. Check out Storm Coming below and stay tuned for more from Manny Laurenko!
