I honestly was going to do a dope write-up, but Zilla is the man with the tunes and the man with words. Listen to the smooth tape down below and check out what he had to say about the project:
I’ve always had a special dig on nineties Rap and R&B. When I was a kid my older sister was in high school and she would drive us all to school and we would always ride to the best jams, resulting in my extensive appreciation for artists like Janet Jackson, Destiny’s Child, Aliyah, INOJ, TLC, etc. I even remember the first time I heard Ludacris when Back For the First Time came out, and how fucking sick the beat of “U Got a Problem?” was.
Lately, what’s inspired my own production has been this vibe that I cannot seem to escape even if I wanted to. Heavily influenced by the guys that make up the Soulection collective based out LA (HUGE shout out to the whole crew, specifically Sivey, Sam Gellaitry and Joe Kay), the vibe takes on a chilled out yet funky and snappy atmosphere.
With FAVORS, all my current influences and past inspirations culminated in the studio to create my own take on this vibe today. I wanted to bring a subtle, relaxed vibe that still had some snap and bang to it. I hope the mix brings you the same atmosphere it did me. FAVORS for bae. Also, be sure to check out Short Stories EP by Sam Gellaitry Feb. 17! S/O Daily Chiefers, S/O Soulection. -ZLLA
P.S. my favorite part is at the 8:00 minute mark!
