The next wave of real drill music is heating up, and it’s coming from Compton this time. Being from Illinois, when I picture drill rap, the first thing that comes to mind is Chief Keef. It’s difficult for me to make comparisons in general, and while $amaad is far from a Chief Keef replica, I would be lying if I said I didn’t see $amaad pushing the envelope for a new wave of drill.
$amaad has been building his discography since 2018 on Soundcloud, where it seems he’d cultivated his own sound and audience. In 2022, $amaad kicked it into high gear, dropping five albums, and capping the year off with his best yet, Conviction. Conviction is a twelve-track album with features from Inglewood, California’s Saiah Woes on two tracks, “Wait In The Lobby” and “Big Stunna”. I’m pointing these out because they’re two of the best tracks on the album.
$amaad kicked off 2023 dropping a single a month thus far and has plans to drop his project Chaos & Balance sometime this year. $amaad’s most recent release “Guts” has him warning people that they “know it ain’t safe over here” so just “stay where you stay”. $amaad says he’s made it so far, but he’s “gotta keep on going, sh*t ain’t done yet” explaining that he’s just been “workin’ to work” but “ain’t had no fun yet”. Give “Guts” a listen below, you won’t regret it.
