“Shine” paints severely underrated rapper and producer Childish Major a globe-trotting, rank-climbing artist taking time to reflect on his year while moving a million miles a minute. The music has layers that pair well enough to concoct something out of the The Carter II sessions. It is the vocal tracking that arrests the inclination for southern, brassy, bouncy hip-hop and elevates it to a place where the soul can be felt and not just heard. In just 3:10, SHINE is at once an anthem about moving forward and smirking at the irony that comes with success.
