Montell Fish is as anomalistic as anything out there. In the vein of Kanye West‘s current incarnation, the 22 year old rapper and singer’s art is a direct expression of his faith. Sonically, however, Fish mostly ditches the gospel-influenced exuberance of his forebears and contemporaries. Instead, Fish is a master of mood. His spare, strikingly beautiful songs force you to sit and listen hard.
His latest single, titled “Destroy Myself Just For You,” is no different. Its shimmering guitar is just as affecting and haunting as anything on Blonde. Fish‘s heavily processed vocals are equally intoxicating, pulling you in with their mystery. It’s this unclassifiable nature that makes his music so enticing – one listen just isn’t enough.
