Cut from a similar cloth as Earl Sweatshirt and the late MF Doom, Navy Blue shows his ability to demand our attention from the instant he begins to speak. Gliding over the sample laced production of “1491”, Navy tackles a plethora of topics. This record brings you into his headspace and seems like a complete stream of consciousness. Jumping from idea to idea, Blue paints vivid imagery of being a black man in America. Once upon a time, he looked for Saint Christopher’s protection, but now it’s, “Fuck Christopher Columbus”. This central juxtaposition in ideology could symbolize him growing older and realizing that many American heroes he was taught to love didn’t love him back as a black man.
Director Ryosuke Tanzawa brings the song to life by capturing Blue spitting these potent soliloquies with the cityscape as his backdrop. This really plays into the theme of the self-awareness, showcasing a vivid side of our protagonist. Navy is really one of the best out, so stream the gas below.
