PHARRELL-GIRL-1050x700

2013 was the year of Pharrell and by the looks of it, is trying to make 2014 his year as well. Pharrell is a multi-talented artist that has worked with the likes of  Snoop Dogg, Jay Z, Justin Timberlake, all the way to Daft Punk. But last year, he finally capped his musical transition with his beautiful collaboration on Daft Punk’s new hit album, Random Access Memories.

Even back when Pharrell was with N.E.R.D, his talents always shined through, and always shined the brightest. This fact alone is the reason why I love this album even more. The whole time while listening to this album, the overbearing question that you always seem to catch yourself saying is, “when THE HELL did Pharrell start singing like that?” I mean, for real, have you ever thought Pharrell would ever reach this level of prestige?

Right from the beginning, Pharrell captures your attention with the song entitled, “Marilyn Monroe.” Immediately you start to see the many talents and versatility that Pharrell truly brings to the table. The song features a classy sound where Pharrell seems to be looking for this unique type of girl, even comparing her to beautiful women like Marilyn Monroe, and other gorgeous women of the past. The 10 songs on G I R L are seeping in a puddle sunshine of 70’s R&B, and early 30’s Jazz, like Lionel Richie mixed with today’s generation. These thick and luscious beats are full of hand claps, choir-like vocals, and over-priced fashion; it kinda feels like a sandy beach & your favorite Margarita.

Right from the beginning you can tell that Pharrell had his sights on a concept album. Throughout his harmonic tones, you always hear him referring back to this mysterious girl that he has his sights on. The second song of the album features one of the greatest vocalist of all time, Justin Timberlake, a song called “Brand New. This high funk, high horned tune is something you would see the Jackson 5 play but with a modern-day twist to it. You start to see Pharrell transform as an artist as the project plays out with songs like “Gust Of Wind” and “Lost Queen.” These songs project a certain aura that is different from every song that is featured on this album. “Gust Of Wind” is something out of the Daft Punk playbook, but with a 70’s feel to it which seems to be a theme in this project. With its electronic sound, and even better production quality, Pharrell showcases a certain flavor that has never been shown before.

Songs like “Know Who You Are” & “It Girl” wrap up the tape but continue to add to the brand that he seems to be creating. Throughout the tape Pharrell seems to always know which direction he wants to go, & exactly how to attack it. G I R L is the type of album that has the justifications to define the artist, and even transcend greatness. G I R L is not only an album, but in my opinion, is what has separated him from the normal super star to an legendary status. I thoroughly loved this album from start to beginning, which caught me totally off guard, but hey, what’s meant to be is meant to be. Anyways, check out the album yourself here on DailyChiefers and let me know how you felt.

8.9/10
