Philadelphia’s music scene has a new shining star who goes by the name of KAE. KAE is 19 years old and has been making music for 3 years but began to take it seriously a year ago. She is from the Germantown area of the city and has numerous received co-signs from young rising Philly rappers T$AN, Matt Ox and the queen of Philly herself, Tierra Whack. The two met at a listening party/studio session. Once heard, Tierra told KAE that she has immense potential and will be a star in this music industry. But, in this video KAE has decided to return to her first love, basketball.
“Tomboys Get The Boys” is an infectious banger that I felt would make waves in the rap scene, but I was even more pleased to find out that T$AN would be appearing on a remixed version after his manager had reached out to KAE. They beautifully complimented each other on this version, aesthetically and sonically, rocking cool fits and delivering angelic vocals in a singular vibe, never overstepping one another. The instrumental is fresh out of that one futuristic video game that we all played as a kid that’s simply impossible to put down. In terms of the video itself, everything was directed and styled by KAE who credits Aliyah, Teanna Taylor and others for helping to inspire her signature style. The strobe lights and quick cuts during the basketball scene is my personal favorite part of the video as KAE is seen showcasing various dribble moves and jumpshots that certainly match her AAU basketball origins which she could no longer pursue due to her stronger love for songwriting, dancing and recording.
KAE has been rising at a rapid rate despite this song being the first project that she has released on digital streaming platforms, forecasting an illustrious music career to come. KAE plans to follow up her “TomBoys Get The Boys” EP with a full-length album where she will display her R&B side. KAE’s main choice of music is alternative rock, indie pop and R&B in addition to HipHop. This creative mesh of genres allows her to have a wider musical palate because she is tapping into different styles of sonics. In the meantime, KAE has been handling this recent attention with grace and humility, as she is grateful that people love and support her artistic vision.
