Wig Split by Pouya (ft Denzel Curry)
Pouya is prepping for his next project, Never Thick As Water, and “Wig Split” is the latest single for it. This is an eerie banger that has cold flows and hard-hitting bars. I love Denzel Curry’s use as a sample at the beginning of the record, giving it that Three Six Mafia feeling. This release has me excited for the project, and I’ll be waiting for it to drop!
Flocky Flocky by Don Toliver (ft Travis Scott)
Life Of Don OUT NOW! “Flocky Flocky” is a collaboration of mentor and protege. I always love to see these collaborations because it always feels like a handing of the torch. The record has a plucky guitar and some trap-inspired drums. Don gives us a laidback delivery that’s an earworm. Travis brings a little more energy with his feature on the song. I think this is an enjoyable record; check it out!
Super by Cordae
Cordae is back, and he’s more hungry than ever. “Super” is an homage to him doing great business and showing everyone how to move. From the sounds of the record, Cordae is living a life of massive checks being cut to him and being happy. I enjoy hearing records about being hungry because it’s just motivation for the listeners. If you need a pick-me-up, this is the record for you.
Coming Back by James Blake (ft SZA)
I am a James Blake stan. So you know I had to mention something off his new project on this week’s Friday Heat Check. “Coming Back” is an ethereal record that captures fighting for someone’s respect and coming back into their life. The cognitive dissonance of knowing someone isn’t the best for you but wanting them is a significant theme in the song. Sza lends her distinct voice, and it pulls the track together.
Breathe Deeper Remix by Tame Impala (ft Lil Yachty)
“Breathe Deeper” is one of my favorite records by Tame Impala. So I was delighted to see that Lil Yatchy was going to be on the remix. We get this psychedelic instrumentation with Yachty’s quirky voice, a departure for what he’s been doing recently. I think this is a fun crossover, and the video is sick as fuck!
Act Out by Cubie (ft Stickz)
Cubie has been holding Boston’s underground scene for a minute. “Act Out” is his most recent release, and it shows that he has so much to prove. With melodic flows and well-crafted bars, Cubie will find his way to success. The use of the drill production is an excellent choice because the bass is CRAAAAAAAZZZZYYYYYY. Stickz gives an outstanding feature as well and adds a nice change of pace.
